    Connecticut ranks 44th out of 50 states and the District of Columbia in small-business friendliness, according to the Small Business Survival Index 2011: Ranking the Policy Environment for Entrepreneurship Across the Nation. The ranking represents a drop of three places from 2010, when Connecticut ranked 41st.

    Department of Motor Vehicles customers will, within 3 years, be able to renew any vehicle’s registration online as part of the first phase of a three-phase computer modernization project, the agency announced. Currently, only passenger cars whose owners do not owe property taxes or have other violations that prevent registration of the vehicle can be performed online.

    The Internal Revenue Service is presenting a free Worker Classification Webinar on Feb. 15, 2012, at 2 pm. The program, which requires registration, is for small business owners and payroll professionals to learn about and will cover employee and independent contractor issues and the Voluntary Classification Settlement Program, including: Defining workers as employees and independent contractors; what to consider in determining a worker’s status; looking at Forms SS-8 and 8919; how to treat corporate officers; determining if you qualify for federal employment tax relief under Section 530; and details about the Voluntary Classification Settlement Program.
