Gateway Community College
United Steel, Inc.
The structural steel phase of Gateway Community College in New Haven was the subject of the Build CT Award in the Other Specialty category. This 358,000 square foot building went up in downtown New Haven on two city blocks between North Frontage Road and Crown Street. This project was broken down into four phases. The first phase required steel to be erected over the existing tunnel so the tunnel could continue to be operational during construction. Phase two encompassed the South Building and required a large conventional crane with a luffer. Phase three began shortly after and ran simultaneously with phase two creating a very complex delivery schedule. The bridge over George Street was phase four.
