Construction NewsBRIEFS!10-2-2012

Technical revisions to the Conn. Fire Safety Code proposed regulation from the Dept. of Construction Services, necessitated by adoption of the Connecticut State Fire Prevention Code in order to eliminate duplication and confusion over applicable requirements, were approved by the Regulation Review Committee at its meeting on Sept. 25, 2012. Numerous provisions of the fire safety code were included in the fire prevention code, which enhanced the enforcement abilities of fire marshals.

A key environmental provision in MAP-21, the new two-year federal transportation bill, is the requirement that states set aside 25% of Construction Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement funds for projects that occur in areas that are in non-attainment for fine particulate matter, according to “Environmental Changes in New Transportation Bill a Win for Industry”, AGC of America Constructor magazine, September/October 2012. Retrofitting diesel construction equipment is expensive and important for contractors with older equipment; it may not be feasible so the provision may enable them to work in new areas because funding is available for the retrofit, according to AGC’s senior environmental advisor on law and policy.
