Connecticut, Texas Share Top Honors as State Associations of the Year
The Connecticut Ready Mixed Concrete Association (CRMCA) and Texas Aggregates & Concrete Association (TACA) have both been named as 2007 NRMCA State Associations of the Year, an award which honors state and area associations for their contributions to the industry in the areas of research, education, advocacy and promotion. The two winners were selected from a field of outstanding nominations for associations around the country.
Some of TACA's recent accomplishments include the development and execution of a comprehensive product and industry promotion program that will measurably increase the implementation and use of concrete, cement and aggregate products in Texas. Already, 91,000 cubic yards of concrete, 19,000 tons of cement and 137,000 tons of aggregate have been successfully promoted by TACA's new marketing/technical standards staff, resulting in a considerable benefit to the members' bottom lines. TACA has also been an organizational force behind the establishment of a Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program at Texas State University, which should be accepting students this fall. These accomplishments are in addition to a continued steady program of legislative and regulatory advocacy, educational offerings and support of industry research.
CRMCA's accomplishments included the organization and construction of an insulated concrete form house as the showcase exhibit at a recent home show. The project required fine-tuned coordination and partnership with several state and local-level industry associations, as well as recruiting volunteers from different industry sectors. In the advocacy arena, CRMCA worked closely this past year with the Connecticut Department of Transportation to revise the state's specification for portland cement concrete and related materials, as well as the Concrete for Structures specification. In addition, this collaboration resulted in the creation of a new state cement cost adjustment specification and the development and implementation of a pilot research program with CONNDOT for maturity meter testing for concrete.
The awards were presented to CRMCA's Don Shubert and TACA's Michael Stewart at the 2008 NRMCA Annual Convention in March in Las Vegas.
